What in mma or the ufc makes you the undisputed champion of a weight class?
in mean what makes someone an undisputed champ as opposed to the champ. I ask because Rampage Jackson is the first undisputed light heavyweight champ in the ufc but a bunch of people where the ufc before he even came in
In Jackson's case, he fought Dan Henderson, who had the Pride FC 205lbs belt (they called it a Middleweight championship there), and when he beat him, he united the two biggest titles of that weight class.
Tonight, Lesnar, the UFC heavyweight champ, will fight Mir, who won the Interim HW title when Couture dropped out for about a year. So right now the UFC has two HW champs. The winner of tonight's fight will be the undisputed HW champ. Similar situations went down when Serra fought GSP the second time and Couture fought Tito. Sometimes when the champ, due to injury, contract disputes or whatever, isn't able to defend their belt in a timely fashion, the UFC will hold a match for the interim title, which is sort of a place-holder until the real champ is ready to defend their belt.
